The potential for a teacher strike was thrust into reality on September 29, when Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling announced that teachers had voted to reject a proposed agreement by 89.5 percent.

Teachers need backing from parents and the public to ensure Alberta’s students receive the public education they deserve. You can share your support by writing a letter to your MLA, sharing advocacy materials, or striking up a conversation with friends, family and people you encounter during your day to day.

The following facts can help you inform others about the ongoing bargaining situation:

  • Teachers did not want to strike, but it was necessary to pressure the government to address chronic underfunding.
  • Teachers are asking the government to listen to what educators and parents say about learning conditions and student needs.
  • Hiring new teachers is not enough—salary improvements are needed to retain current teachers and attract new ones.
  • Teachers are advocating for safe classrooms and access to support like school counsellors.
  • Teachers are taking job action to help today’s students as well as future students.

A teachers’ strike creates uncertainty, anxiety and challenges for families, but it’s a last resort. Help us fight for public education so we can minimize learning disruptions now and maximize learning outcomes going forward.
